In this lesson, we take a look at how to say “crazy” in Korean. For that, we use the word “michyeosseo” (in Hangul: 미쳤어). While we don’t recommend running around telling it to people you don’t know, it is, just like in English, a rather common word in everyday conversations.
A Closer Look
You’ll often hear or use this in the form of a question to express “Are you crazy?” “Are you out of your mind?” You can use it to joke around with your friends when they carry out a half-baked idea or say something not quite sound. The word comes from the verb “michida” (미치다) – to go crazy, and is used in its past tense. So literally you’re saying “went crazy”.
If you want to say “that guy is crazy” or “[subject] is crazy” you simply add the subject in front of the word. For example
- jeo namja michyeosseo (저 남자 미쳤어).
- [subject] michyeosseo (미쳤어).
If you find yourself in a situation where you are talking with or to a person who is older than you or someone you don’t know very well, it might be appropriate to upper the politeness level. This is done by adding “yo” (요) at the end of the word. For example:
- jeo namja michyeosseoyo (저 남자 미쳤어요)
