예뻐요 – How To Say Pretty in Korean

How To Say Pretty in Korean - 예쁘다

Pretty in Korean

In this lesson, we take a look at how to say “pretty” in Korean. The standard way of saying this is with the word:

yeppeoyo

(in Hangul: 예뻐요).

To make a sentence, you can combine it with the word jeongmal (정말) meaning “really”:

jeongmal yeppeoyo [정말 예뻐요]

= You are really pretty

Note that this is polite Korean, meaning that you would use this form of the word with people who are older than you and people you’re not very close friends with. In cases where you would want to use informal Korean to say “you are pretty” you should use:

yeppeo

(in Hangul: 예뻐).

As you can see, you only drop the “yo” (요) part at the end to make it more friendly and informal. Be careful however, as you should only use this with:

  • People who are younger than you
  • Close friends
  • Siblings
  • And of course: YOUR GIRLFRIEND!!!! ^^

Notice how the subject (“you”) is omitted. In Korean, you don’t need to specify the subject if it’s already obvious who it is that you are talking about.

If you need to specify the subject (like a name) however, you just put it in front.

If you think something is pretty and you want to ask for their approval in polite Korean, you say:

yeppujiyo?

(in Hangul: 예쁘지요?).

Which literally means “pretty, isn’t it?

And in informal Korean you would say:

yeppuji?

(in Hangul: 예쁘지?).

If you want to use it to describe a noun, like “a pretty girl” you need to use the form:

yeppun + [noun]”

(in Hangul: 예쁜).

You then put the noun after the adjective, just like you would in English. For example:

yeppun yeoja [예쁜 여자]

= (a) pretty girl

For reference, you might also want to know how to say this in the most formal way in Korean. For this, we use the word:

yeppumnida

(in Hangul: 예쁩니다).

While you will primarily use this word in its polite or informal form, although uncommon, you might occasionally encounter this (or even use it yourself) in more formal situations like:

  • The news
  • Debates
  • Speeches
  • Meetings
  • etc

Finally, the dictionary form of this word is “yeppuda” [예쁘다].

Note, however, that you would only say this to girls. If you want to tell a guy he’s handsome you use the word “잘생겼어요
